When a truck competes on the most demanding test tracks in Europe, the only thing that counts is superior performance. The new MAN D30 PowerLion has demonstrated just that, with a thrilling display. In one of the largest press test campaigns in the industry, our new drive train has been hailed by the toughest critics out there – Europe’s trade journalists. Not only has it surpassed its predecessor, but also clearly broken away from the competition and beaten all sorts of fuel consumption records.
Across Europe, the test-drive reviews were full of praise:
“Record-breaking fuel consumption.” – TodoTransporte (Spain)
“The performance is so striking, it needs no further comment.” – Transportare Oggi (Italy)
“In short, we are thrilled and impressed by the MAN D30.” – BIGtruck (Netherlands)
This overwhelming feedback shows that the D30 PowerLion isn’t just a technical innovation – it’s a statement. A win for every operator who strives for maximum efficiency, and a bonus for every driver on the road with this champion.
In the new MAN D30 PowerLion drive train, every component is designed for maximum efficiency and durability. Find out exactly how the perfect interaction between the engine, exhaust gas aftertreatment and engine brake reduces your operating costs.
The D3066 commercial vehicle engine achieves a top fuel consumption of ≈ 169 g/kWh, which corresponds to an efficiency of > 50%. To increase efficiency, torque and power, the following measures are crucial:
High combustion temperatures: deliberate elimination of cooled, regulated EGR (exhaust gas recirculation).
Higher compression: increased from D26 (21:1) to D30 23:1.
Higher ignition pressure: increased from D26 (≈ 220 bar) to D30 ≈ 250 bar.
To make the deliberately “hot” combustion Euro 6e-compliant, the D30 uses two SCR catalytic converters arranged one behind the other (SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment = selective catalytic reduction).
The design means the raw-Nox level is higher because it does not use cooled EGR – part of the design aimed at boosting consumption efficiency.
SCR Stage 1 reduces a large proportion of nitrogen oxides; the exhaust gases are further processed.
SCR Stage 2 reduces the residual Nox content to Euro 6e (well under the test bench threshold).
The additional consumption of AdBlue is more than compensated for by the fuel savings – which is ultimately economical for operators.
The Compression Release Brake uses additional rocker arms, each of which generates an exhaust valve stroke close to TDC in the compression stroke during braking. The compressed air can escape in a controlled manner; the piston pumps instead of working on the drive.
Effect: The compression energy stored in the cylinder is converted into braking power; in the following expansion stroke, the air remaining in the cylinder no longer has a driving effect on the crankshaft.
Benefits: Up to 355 kW braking power, significantly less thermal and mechanical stress on the service brake – wear and maintenance costs are reduced.
Power and torque levels: 380 / 410 / 440 / 480 / 520 / 560 hp | 2,100 to 2,800 Nm.
Every watt of power and every drop of fuel saved improves your bottom line. That’s why we’ve optimised not only the engine, but the entire vehicle with maximum efficiency in mind. Discover the smart technologies in the transmission and bodywork that help reduce fuel consumption while increasing driving comfort and safety.
Optimal gear ratio for every route:
Depending on the load and topography, the MAN TipMatic 14 intelligently toggles between the speed-reducing overdrive gear for long distances and the low-loss direct gear for maximum transmission efficiency.
Aerodynamics that pay off:
New side and underbody panels even out the airflow, reduce drag and help reduce your CO₂ toll rates.
Less friction loss:
The further developed brake generation ensures the pads return cleanly after braking. This minimises friction and helps to reduce fuel consumption.
Hardly noticeable gear changes:
MAN SmartShifting uses sensor data to adjust the engine speeds at lightning speed. The result is ultra-smooth shifting without interrupting traction – for relaxed and confident driving.
Additional braking power on demand:
The optional, detachable Retarder 47 offers high continuous braking performance downhill, relieving the service brake and, in turn, reducing wear. During normal driving, the retarder is disconnected from the drive. This prevents power loss and helps reduce fuel consumption.
A satisfied and focused driver is the key to greater efficiency and safety on the road. That’s why we have consistently geared the workstation in the MAN TGX and MAN TGS with the new MAN D30 PowerLion towards relief and comfort. From noise insulation to intuitive operation – every detail helps to reduce fatigue and keep motivation high. Discover the highlights that noticeably improve the driver’s everyday life.
Minimal background noise:
Special acoustic insulation in the windscreen and a dampening engine housing significantly reduce noise levels in the cab of the 4x2 semitrailer models. This ensures better sleep, higher concentration and less stress at the wheel.
Fully digital cockpit:
The 12.3” instrument cluster displays all relevant information, including 3D views of the assist systems, in a clear and modern layout. The optional “calm mode” hides secondary information and helps keep eyes on the road.
Harmonious shifting:
The perfect interaction between the D3066 engine, the MAN TipMatic 14 and the GPS-controlled MAN EfficientCruise cruise control with PredictiveDrive ensures a relaxed driving experience and noticeably relieves the driver on demanding long-haul journeys.
Every part of the MAN D30 PowerLion drive train has been developed with a clear goal in mind: Sustainably reduce your total cost of ownership (TCO). By reducing fuel consumption, maintenance costs and downtimes, you can measurably increase the profitability of your fleet. This is a business investment that pays off from the very first mile.
Noticeably lower TCO:
The perfectly coordinated interaction of the D30 engine, transmission and aerodynamics reduces your fuel consumption by up to 4 %1). This not only reduces your diesel costs, but also gives you a decisive advantage in terms of CO₂ tolls.
Maximised uptime:
Thanks to extended oil change intervals of up to 150,000 km in long-haul transport, your truck needs fewer visits to the workshop. This helps reduce downtime and service costs for your fleet.
More range and flexibility:
Intelligent combination tanks for diesel and AdBlue enable a fuel volume of up to 1,270 litres.
